Maya Shader Library
Oliver Markowski has recently written a script called FBI_ShaderLibrary that makes it easy to build a comprehensive shader library within Maya.
What’s wrong with just using the default Hypershade Shader Library you may ask? Well, what makes this MEL script really good is that it is written in a way that makes it very flexible to tweak, delete and update your shaders on the fly without even closing Maya!

This is really a huge time saver if you work on projects that consistently require the same or similar shaders over and over again.
The other great advantage is that you can customise the scene itself and add or change the preview object mesh, lighting set-up or anything else. These thumbnails I’ve posted here are tweaked versions of Jeff Patton’s object mesh from a few years back.

Even better is that thumbnails are generated automatically through batch renders, materials import without prefixes and textures file paths are automatically rebuilt.

THanks for the heads up! This is a great script.
No worries Dan.
If anyone wants the custom V-Ray test scene shown here in the thumbnails, let me know and I’ll post it. Thanks.

Hi simha,

However it is a V-Ray for Maya shader only.
hi guys,
Maya2VRay conversion script by Paul Dreisen is not working in maya 2011!! can u guys help me?
Hi Bharathidasan,
I just tested Paul’s Maya2VRay script on two different computers with Maya 2011 SP3 and it seems to be working on both of them.
I’m not sure what could be going wrong for you, but see if you can get in contact with Paul through his site. This would be the best way:
some good points from you and it helps me to solve a problem, thanks.
script is not working in maya 2009 win 32bit!! can u guys help me?
Hi uday, did you see the instructions included with the download?
It is also important when in Maya to use this command to load the script:
source FBI_shaderLibrary;FBI_shaderLibrary(“YOUR_LIBRARY_PATH_HERE”,”");
Obviously replacing YOUR_LIBRARY_PATH_HERE with a path. Make sure to use forward slashes as well.
Does this work with Maya 2012?
Yes, it does work under 2012.

Hi Mayzie,
I saw that you recreated the thumbnails with Jeff Patons mesh.
I would love to know the process to do this if possible.
regards,
B.
Hi Mayzie, yes please. I would like the custom Vray test scene as mentioned above.
Hi, try download from here http://www.mediafire.com/?js0g6o1hjt6w01s
Thank you Mayzie!

When installing in 2012 and pressing Export?
You have to select the shader/material node itself, then press the Export button. If you’re already doing that then I’m not sure what could be going wrong for you.
Hey thanks for your work on this, can I get the test scene?
