Manipulator Axis Orientation Shortcut
After getting a little tired of using Maya’s marking menus when changing the manipulator’s axis to “Set To Edge” or “Set To Face” all the time, I thought I might try creating a shortcut to speed things up.
To use this script, just select a face or edge and run the script. Maya’s manipulator will automatically snap to the custom axis of whatever is selected. Much faster than the marking menu and it will also retain the selection.
It’s probably best to assign this script to a shortcut key as well for even faster use. I prefer to use alt + a (easy to remember as a = align).
To call the script use “alignAxis”.

Sorry everyone – epic mistake – I left out a few lines on the original script.
If anyone downloaded it before 29th March, then it might be best to re-download the MEL script again. Sorry!
Awesome script!!
love it
too bad it is just for single component, but still huge thanks for sharing =)
p.s. guys at modo camp are so lucky to have all those funky action center tricks. wish maya got something similar some day
Cheers, thanks Almakos.
I know what you mean about Maya’s tools, I a think a lot of programs do things better than Maya – but ultimately one of Maya’s strengths (and weaknesses) is the ability to script tools. I just wish I could spend more time making more tools.
